What’s in a name? A garden by any other name would smell as sweet. But here at Eartha Grange, we took the naming of our organization seriously. We thought we would take a moment to explain the meaning behind Eartha Grange’s name.
Eartha brings us close to Mother Earth. A slight variation of “earth,“ the word comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for “the ground,” or more specifically, “the ground upon which we stand.” It is also the ground we till, plant and care for. We love the Earth and couldn’t think of a better namesake.
Grange has a little less obvious explanation. Grange refers to a country house with multiple farm buildings spread across the land. This spread of land encompasses the space where someone lives and works in different agricultural activities. The Grange is also one of the country’s oldest farming organizations and has been a rural life center for many farming communities since 1867. Though we claim no relation, we share The Grange’s desire to support and empower the community through agriculture.
Eartha Grange goes beyond just our gardens. We didn’t want to be constrained to a particular plot of land. We wanted a name encompassing an idea of a larger geographical area than just our farms. Eartha Grange is a collaborative- our gardens, your garden, our farms, your farm.
We also didn’t want to be limited to just flowers or veggies or trees. We want to study all things agricultural and meet people where they are, in their own spot of earth. And we hope our name reflects that vision.
Our Purpose
To inspire a life well-lived through community centered gardening.
-
At Eartha Grange, good stewardship involves "digging deep" into tried and true agricultural practices while continually learning new skills, techniques and information that strengthens our connectivity to the earth.
-
Experiences gain meaning when they are shared. Eartha Grange shares agricultural knowledge, resources, and enthusiasm to physically and emotionally boost our community, regardless of whether you garden!
-
Creating a garden enlivens the soul. It also has many health benefits! Eartha Grange is an ongoing creative endeavor that aims to immerse our community in the bounties of the earth. From delicious recipes to fresh flower arranging, we create to draw closer to nature and each other.
Our story
Eartha Grange was established in 2024 by April Oto and Eda Clarkson as a collaborative effort to distribute produce through the Free Farmstand and share gardening joy with their neighbors. April and Eda are avid gardeners and lifelong learners dedicated to human flourishing by connecting with nature.
“The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.”
- Alfred Austin
